• What is Mindfulness?

  • Awake and Aware, LLC is built foundationally on the belief that mindfulness can change how you experience life, your emotions and your understanding of yourself. Through mindfulness practice you can become more grounded, less reactive and more able to enjoy each and every moment of the precious life you live.

The concept of mindfulness has been around for centuries and in the last decade has joyfully become a household term in our western culture. It is not a religion, nor a theology.

  • Mindfulness is simply maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment. It is a way of paying attention to, and seeing clearly whatever is happening in our lives. Because mindfulness is grounded in acceptance it can help us to become less reactive to our thoughts and feelings and instead bring compassion and kindness to ourselves and others.

Left to our own “thought habits” we are likely to engage in what has been called “monkey mind”. This is where our thoughts bounce from one thing to the next, often leaving in its wake, confusion, anxiety, sadness, overwhelm, craving and despair. As we engage and focus on these thoughts and feelings we create suffering and a sense that things cannot change. Our monkey minds bounce back and forth between the past and the future, forgetting entirely about the present. The present is where change can happen, as it is the ONLY real experience we are having at any given moment!

Mindfulness can be practiced in formal settings when we sit down for a period of meditation, or informally in everyday life, simply by paying attention non-judgmentally to our experience (while eating, driving, washing dishes, talking…) We are not trying to create a special feeling or experience – simply to realize that this moment is already very special – because you are alive and awake in it.
